A song for the deaf.

Anyone who knows me knows that music therapy is the perfect career for me. They also know that it abducts me from real life and makes it impossible for me to function throughout the year, which I think is going to be totally worth it in the end. So basically I'm putting the blame on music therapy for my hiatus.

Sorrynotsorry.

I've always liked to think music is magical, and music therapy allows me to continue that belief in a socially acceptable way. This semester I've been working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing -- I know, it doesn't make any sense, and that's why it makes sense. Music is so much more than I could have ever dreamed in my wild magical dreams. It is so magical that it helped me connect and communicate with children who can't even hear me. It showed me that unicorns and Hogwarts must be real, because music can do the impossible.

As Dumbledore once said, "music, a magic beyond all we do here."

Scenes from the week.

Not the weekend, the week.
Because for some reason, I haven't been able to blog all week.
Hmm, I wonder why that could have been...

I had my music theory final on Friday...and I got a B!
Most of my weekend was dedicated to the music history final, which I took Monday.
♥ I have been practicing piano for about 15 hours now, so hopefully I do well on my final in about 3 hours. {Did I ever mention I bought myself a piano? Maybe I should some day...}
♥ For Mother's Day, my dad and I took Grandma out to Red Robin for dinner. Yum!
♥ My grandma is such an amazing woman, she is smart, funny, getting her doctorate, and way cooler than me. Happy Mother's Day, Grandma!
♥ Isn't my mom gorgeous? I will have a special Mom post on Friday, but I just have to say Happy Mom's Day to the best mom in the world!

Now, back to practicing...

{I hate} Mondays; two words.

Women's Chorus.

The bane of my existence!
Don't get me wrong, these girls are all lovely.
I just don't like choir. Mostly I don't like singing with other sopranos. Diva, much?
Or interrupting my precious me time with concert.
I was about to lie and say "studying time," but I thought you all might scoff and roll your eyes at me.
It's the thought that counts, right?

The end!

{I hate} Mondays: Bye bye, Sven..

This is Sven.
We have been together for 4 years, and today was the day that I finally had to say goodbye to him. I was overly sad about it, and almost didn't want to give the guy my keys!
Sven has been such a good truck to me, through thick and thin he got me through the days.
I will always love and remember you, Sven!

And this is why I hate Mondays:
- My piano teacher picking on me all class long as I slowly died inside of note overload.
- My music theory teacher say "Well, we were going to add 20 points to the exam, but you
don't really need it, do you?"
- Having to wait 3 and a half hours at school for my next class because Jake is a little ditcherbrain!
- Being "that girl" in the MU that sits at a 4 person table, when she is only one person.
- Seeing someone who irks me to no end in the MU! Awkward glare begins now.
- Saying goodbye to my beloved car.

How was your monday?
Super short post today. But don't worry, my weekend post will commence tomorrow. Because it was a great weekend. And I said so.

18 April 2011

{I hate} Mondays; seeing red.

Hate:
- That Arizona pretends to be California by blowing wind through my hair and the palm trees. Hey Arizona, get a beach!
- My flip flop breaking at school and walking around like a zombie, one leg dragging behind me.
- Having a photographer at the music building ask me to move from the spot I'm in, because he could see me dancing to my iPod in the back of his pictures.
- Not being able to watch Harry Potter 7 in every single class for every minute of my day.
- That Jake is so much better at dying hair than I am.

- I also hate that I make faces like that.
- And that I still don't have my camera back from Nikon {but thank you Eva for being the best phone ever!}

Wanna know how my hair turned out?
Stay tuned!

*Eva = my HTC Evo.

Make the most of yourself

for that is all there is of you.

{shirt: Charlotte; belt: Ross; skirt: Forever, sandals: Forever; horcrux: cave with Dumbledore}

Remember last week how I absolutely hated my Friday and literally thought I was going to die? This week is the complete opposite. I felt like I was being born!
This Friday was more like my amazing, wonderful, perfect miracle day.
Because literally, miracles happened today.

Miracle Number Uno: So remember that horrible test that I stayed up all night studying for? Well we got our scantrons back today (took her long enough!), and Amber reallyyyy wanted to compare tests, when I noticed something odd..
I was missing the last 7 questions on the scantron.
Amber looked at me, dumbfounded, and exclaimed "Brittany, you didn't finish your test?!"
I distinctly remember going straight through to the end. There's no way I could have skipped and entire page. I must not have even had that page to begin with.
So I did an awkward little jumphoprun over my friends, as fast as my little legs could carry me, down to the stage (yes, the school of music lectures are in music halls, on stages) to the TA to tell her my dilemma.
She asked her higher power about it, and she didn't even say boo!
My professor just said "make it out of 33 instead of 40. Nice work, Brittany!"
So I got a 93 instead of an 84 on my exam!

Miracle Number Two: As you can see, Katie forced me into taking daily outfit pictures today {hers}. I'll confess, it's not that I don't like my outfit. Because I wouldn't wear it if I didn't. I honestly just don't feel comfortable having my whole body taken a picture of.
I felt so awkward the whole time because I thought that when I looked at the pictures I was going to realize how large and uncute I really am, how people really view me, and I was going to feel really awful about myself.
The moment finally came that Katie uploaded the pictures onto her computer...
and I liked them.
It feels so good to like me!

Did any miracles happen for you this Friday?

{I hate} Mondays

Per request, I'm starting a new theme!
Last week I posted a letter that I wrote to the "Music Gods" about how much I hate music theory. My friends asked me that day if I would write another one in history, but I really wanted to take notes (for reasons unknown).
But I promised them this week that I would write one!
Upon telling this to Katie, she proposed that I make Mondays my hate day. Luckily, I had already been thinking the same thing, because let's be honest, who likes Mondays?

So today I "conveniently" left my baby netbook, Rosita, at home, and this was the product of music history class:

I woke up this morning really early to get ready for piano, had pay to park on campus because Jake had to change someone's tire (rude!), went to piano and got a lot of homework, went to theory and found out I failz at life, then went to history and wrote this note.
After class I was so excited to leave that heckhole they call the school of music, when I walk up and find this on my car:

Funniest part?
I actually thought it was real and they had run out of the computer paper they normally use.
FAIL.
But my boyfriend is cute, and made  my day way better by awarding me this ticket, and making me bacon and eggs for lunch. Then we cuddled for a while, while singing Rebecca Black's Friday. We're cute.
Now I'm off to FHE with Katie, then Yogurt{poop}land with Jake, Jeremy and Daria. I feel like I'm cheating on Yodipity, but I will sacrifice my love for Jeremy and Daria's last night in town.

Let me know how much you hate Mondays!

26 March 2011

A funny mess.

This phrase, said by a Jesterz improv-er, basically describes my last 24 hours.
Along with this picture:

Honestly, I'm surprised in still alive.
My terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day:
1. Professors being jerks and schedules tests all on the same day the week after spring break.
2. Staying up all night with my friend Jessica studying for these exams, with the help of some RockCraps and Burkholder's A {Ridiculously Long and Boring} History of Western Music.
3. Not being used to caffeine and feeling sick all morning. Thanks, RockCraps.
3. Bombing every test that I took today. So the all-nighter was futile.
4. Taking the bus because no one could take me home after my horror scenes, then having my bus driver try anything in his power to kill me (i.e., punching it before I could sit down sending me flying through the bus, abrupt stops, hopping curbs, swerving like a madman, etc.).
5. {DISCLAIMER: this is pretty gross. Move on to #6 if you get queasy easily.} Going to the bathroom at the Tempe Transit Center, right next to a woman who was having some obvious stomach problems. I mean, literally, sounded like she was exploding every few seconds. And at each explosion would say "oops" or "that felt good." And then I threw up.
6. Having to take another bus, with another horrible bus driver. I had to do the preggo mommy breathing the entire time and try to keep bathroom girl out of my mind.
7. Getting home, so excited to go to sleep, and finding out that I'm too tired to sleep. So I laid in bed for an hour and a half before I could actually fall asleep.
8. Waking up way sooner than planned because I yet again had to go to the bathroom. Thanks again, RockCraps.

But what goes down, must come back up, right?
My wonderful, marvelous, fabulous, very good day:

1. Going to Jesterz. Let me tell you, they are fantastic. Hilarious. Fairly clean for comedy skits. I have been twice now and it is seriously such a fun thing to do on a Friday night out! It cheered me up immediately.
2. Reaching into my purse and finding a full Yodipity stamp card, and realizing that I would be receiving a free cup of joy. It was a miracle.
3. Chocolate is supposed to make people happy, so I went with York Patty yogurt, thin mints, and brownie bites. Mmmm, happiness overlooooooad!
4. Crayons & Jessica's birthday! And all my beautiful friends who I got to spend the best part of my day with {Amber, Katie, and Lauren}.
Happy birthday to Jessica!
5. My best friend. She always makes my day.

Proof that I survived!

{Daily outfit syle}

I hope you survived this Friday, too.

23 March 2011

She'd be better off shoveling snow.

-Richard Strauss, about me.

Just kidding. He didn't even know me. And you probably don't even know who he is. Unless you are currently studying for the music history exam, just like me!
But, seeing as I'm writing this, and you're reading it, that means that we are no longer studying.
Good, because music history is just about the worst class ever invented.
So I did something fun instead!

Notes on this video:
1. I look absolutely disgusting because my water heater in the apartment broke (ha!) so I couldn't take a shower this morning before class. Get over it.
2. The thumbnail makes me look like a sad puppy dog. I'll get over that some day.
3. That weird yelp at 0:34 is my roommate, not my dog. Literally smh (shook my head).
4. If I did daily outfits, this one would be one of the cutest, if I do say so myself.
5. When you mess up at the end of a video but don't have enough time to take away from studying to make another 3 minute and 37 second video, play it off like that's how it is supposed to be. Not that I did that, or anything.

Roomie and I are off to get coffee for studying. I don't even like coffee.
Happy studying, my little procrastinators!

If music be the food of love;

play on.
I love music. And I love that I was fortunate enough to be selected for the music therapy program at Arizona State University. And I mostly love my career choice, music therapy.
But apparently, I hate music theory.
Because instead of taking notes in class today, I wrote an essay on how much I hate music theory.
Examples and all.

{I know what you're thinking, "I wish Brittany knew how to spell broccoli" well guess what, I hate it so much that I don't care if I spelled it wrong. It doesn't deserve for my pencil to write it's vile name, so I gave it an alias.}

FACEPALM.
I hope that you had a better first day back than I did!

01 March 2011

I never talk during music

-- at least, during good music.

I was definitely musical girl today, as I am most days. But I thought that today, since I had a wonderfulslowrelaxing day, I would show you (instead of having you blindly trust me!) how musical I am! Not to say I am good by any means (heaven forbid!), but just how much I enjoy singing and playing.

Stuck Like Glue from Brittany Lewis on Vimeo.

I have been singing since I could talk, and I've been playing guitar since I was 13. I love it! And it's absolutely perfect for the job I want to go into -- music therapy. What could be better than playing music all day to help people feel better?
Oh yeah, nothing.

As for the rest of my day, I had ear-training (bleck!) this morning, then voice lessons where I learned an awesome jazz song called Summertime by George Gershwin and got my British on with a song called The sun whose rays by Gilbert and Sullivan, then I came home and curled up in a blanket and read The Picture of Dorian Gray.

I know what you're thinking -- "BRITTANY! It was darn-tootin hot outside today! How could you curl up in a blanket?!>@(#!"

Riddle me this: It was hot outside, but freezing cold in my apartment. Like, 65 degrees. Fahrenheit. Without the air conditioning running. Conundrum!

After that, I paid some bills (double bleck!), then went to Buffalo with my Jake. Afterwards, though we really wanted Yodipity, we settled for yogurtini. Luckily they had my favorite flavor with my favorite topping, so I didn't cry too much.

The rest of my night will consist of an abundance of music theory homework that has piled up from me having a horrible migraine for over a week (triple bleck!). I'm pretty sure that the definition for migraine is music theory. Look it up.
What did you all do on this random Tuesday? :)

If one hears bad music, it is one's duty to drown it out in conversation.
